# Bits

> Run a persistent personal agent with editable local memory

Bits is an open-source personal agent that runs on your own computer and keeps working between conversations. Its local journal records task progress, while Markdown files hold information you want it to remember. You can inspect or edit that memory directly, and return to a task after a restart without relying entirely on a chat transcript.

The agent can use connected tools through MCP and produce interactive artifacts with actions that people or other agents can use. Choose a hosted model provider or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, then run Bits on a laptop or your own server. It suits people who want to assemble and maintain a personal assistant around their existing tools.
