Dead Cells is an action platformer where repeated runs explore a changing castle. Players combine weapons, spells, and evasive movement to fight enemies and bosses with attack patterns to learn. A failed run starts another attempt, making the encounters and equipment choices part of an ongoing cycle of practice.

Progress opens additional areas and routes, so players can choose a different path through the castle on later runs. Hidden passages and secret rooms add exploration alongside combat. A player can experiment with a new weapon combination, learn how an enemy signals its attack, and apply that knowledge during the next attempt to move farther through the castle.
