Hollow Knight follows the Knight through Hallownest, a ruined kingdom beneath the town of Dirtmouth. This 2D action-adventure combines exploration of interconnected caverns with enemies, bosses, and traps. New skills expand what the character can do, opening further routes while the player pieces together the place's history.

Hand-drawn characters and environments distinguish the areas, with an orchestral score accompanying the journey. Free content packs add quests, charms, encounters, and boss challenges. Progress involves learning an enemy's patterns as well as recognizing where a new ability makes a previously inaccessible path worth exploring.
