# Microsoft Authenticator

> Approve sign-ins and generate verification codes for personal and work accounts

Microsoft Authenticator is an Android and iOS app for verifying sign-ins to personal, work, and school accounts. It can generate one-time codes for compatible services, including accounts from other providers, or receive approval requests for Microsoft sign-ins. You add accounts through their security settings, usually by scanning a QR code, then use the app when an additional verification step is requested.

Supported Microsoft accounts can also use passwordless phone sign-in, while organizations using Microsoft Entra can enable passkeys and other authentication methods according to their policies. One-time codes work offline; approval notifications need a connection. The app keeps multiple accounts together, with biometric or device-PIN checks available for supported authentication flows. Features depend on account type, device, and administrator settings.
