# OpenZiti

> An open-source network overlay that connects services by identity

OpenZiti is an open-source platform for connecting applications through an identity-based encrypted network. Policies define which cryptographic identities can reach a service, rather than treating access to a network address as sufficient permission. Controllers and routing components manage the overlay that carries those connections.

Existing applications can use a tunneler or router, while developers can embed an SDK directly into an application. These approaches let a team apply access controls at the network, host or application level according to its setup. Operators can run their own OpenZiti network and configure identities, services and policies as their systems and authorized users change.
