Ancestry is a genealogy service for building family trees and researching the people, places, and events in a family’s past. Users can begin with relatives they already know, add dates and relationships, and attach photographs, stories, and historical documents to individual profiles. Ancestry Hints suggest records and possible connections to review, while search tools cover collections such as census, birth, marriage, immigration, and military records.

The website and mobile app let users continue their research, update trees, and share discoveries with family. An optional AncestryDNA saliva test adds ancestry estimates and matches with genetic relatives, which can complement documentary research. Creating a basic family tree is free. Access to historical record collections and advanced DNA features varies by membership, and DNA kits are purchased separately.
