GitHits connects coding agents to an index of open-source code, documentation, and package information. Through MCP, a command-line interface, or an API, agents can resolve a package, search its source, read particular files or symbols, and compare versions. This helps ground implementation and debugging work in the dependency release a project actually uses.

Package tools expose release history, dependencies, licenses, and known vulnerability information for evaluating changes or upgrades. A generated-example tool draws on patterns from public projects, while broader delegated research is marked as experimental and forthcoming. The index covers packages and public repositories across multiple ecosystems, with on-demand indexing available when a needed repository is not already present.
