Open-source tools and libraries for audio and video processing

FFmpeg is an open-source multimedia framework for recording, converting, processing, and streaming audio and video. Its command-line tools read media files, capture devices, and network streams, then combine decoding, filtering, encoding, and packaging into repeatable workflows. Users can change formats, resize footage, extract audio, adjust frame rates, and select which video, audio, or subtitle streams to keep. Scripts can apply the same settings across batches of files.
The project also includes ffprobe for inspecting media properties and ffplay for playback. Developers can integrate libraries such as libavcodec, libavformat, and libavfilter into their own applications. FFmpeg runs across platforms including Linux, Windows, and macOS, with codec and hardware support depending on the build. The official website distributes source code and links to separately maintained packages and executable builds.
