Zulip organizes team chat into channels containing named topics. A participant starts a discussion with a topic, then replies stay attached to that conversation as other discussions continue. The unread inbox provides an overview, allowing someone returning later to choose which conversations to catch up on.

This structure supports teams working on different schedules because a reply remains in its original context. Desktop and mobile apps provide access alongside the browser, while integrations bring other work tools into the chat. Organizations can use a hosted service or run the open-source software themselves, with the topics preserving discussion history across the team's ongoing work.
