PlanetScale hosts relational databases with managed operational tools. Its products include Postgres, Vitess for sharded MySQL, and Neki for sharded Postgres. Teams choose the engine and deployment option around their application and workload.

Sharding distributes data across nodes while giving the application a database connection. The sharded products include online schema changes, connection pooling, and managed upgrades. Deployment choices also include infrastructure in the customer's cloud. An application can retain relational queries while the service operates its database infrastructure. The selected engine and setup determine how the data is distributed and which operational capabilities apply.
